The 2020 Toyota 86
The 2020 Toyota 86 is a lightweight and affordable sports car that packs a bundle of fun into one small package. It has been designed from the ground up to have an extremely low centre of gravity. It also has steering so well calibrated that it has Thomas gushing over it. It also has a whopping 205 horsepower! Okay well maybe that last number isn’t so great for a sports car, but the 2020 Toyota 86 is not about straight line power or quarter mile times. It achieves its fantastic handling through a 2.0L boxer engine and its chassis design – maintaining its affordability in the process. However there is some pesky torque dip right in the middle of the rev range – the new model looks to clear that up.
But should you hop into a first gen model right now? Or wait until the next gen comes out? Thomas and James lend their thoughts. Enjoy!
What Will the Next Gen Bring?
The semi-controversial exterior refresh aside, the next generation of BRZ / 86 will now include a larger 2.4L boxer engine. Some fans were left disappointed as their hopes for a turbo model were dashed. But our friend Jason Cammisa has already shown why a turbo engine would have been the wrong choice for this platform. By keeping it N/A, they keep costs down and greatly reduce the torque dip. Does this mean however, that the new model should be the one to buy if you are in the market? Thomas and James address this question and others. We hope you enjoy the episode!
