The 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo
The 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo is the new kid on the block. It offers some serious torque and a competitive price for an all wheel drive turbo-four. But how does it stack up against its competition on the drag strip? In the interest of science and out of pure curiosity, Thomas and James line it up on the the Throttle House Drag Strip. Afterwards, James takes it out on the Throttle House Test Track for a quick review.
With 250 horsepower and 320 lb ft. of torque on high octane, the new Mazda 3 turbo looks to take on the rugged WRX and the known-to-be-fast Golf R. How will it stack up against the Golf R’s 288 horsepower and 280 lb ft. of torque? Or the 268 horsepower and 258 lb ft. of torque coming from the WRX? Each of these cars offers a fun and sporty daily driving experience with a similar layout – which do you think will win off the line?
An AWD Turbo-Four Drag Race
To make things as even as possible, Thomas and James test the three cars in both a drag race and a roll race. To put the speedy Golf R on more equal footing – similar to the 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo – no launch control will be used in the VW. The WRX is equipped with its available automatic CVT transmission – since this is a race of automatics. The CVT WRX has been shown to struggle when putting the power down both off the line and from a roll, but will it be able to hold its own against the turbo AWD newcomer from Mazda? Pick your favourite and cheer them on – we hope you enjoy the race!
