GLS vs Escalade – The $100,000 Question
The Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 is set to take on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade in a battle for the title of SUV King. Each costing roughly $100,000 USD, Thomas and James put these two SUVs through the paces and show-off their tech. This 2021 Cadillac Escalade is in sport platinum trim and has a bunch of awesome features. It also weighs 6350 pounds. The GLS 580 on the other hand, weighs only 5700 pounds and has some pretty impressive features of its own. But it has more competition than just the large and in charge Cadillac that sits beside it. Mercedes calls the GLS the S-Class of SUVs – a bold claim to make considering the luxury and decadence provided in an S-Class. Will the GLS be able to both take down the Cadillac Escalade and live up to the expectations of an S-Class?
Under the Hood
Granted, these two SUVs are not about straight line speed or cornering agility. They are about space, comfort, tech, and road presence. That being said they differ quite significantly in terms of their power delivery and displacement. Both the GLS and the Escalade are powered by a V8, but the Escalade is naturally aspirated, whereas the Benz is turbocharged. Under the hood of the Cadillac is a meaty 6.2 litre V8 that lacks a touch of elegance, but packs a definite punch with a 0-60 time of just 6 seconds. The GLS however, is even quicker. From its 4 litre twin turbo v8, it smoothly reaches 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds. How do these two luxurious SUVs with killer road presence fair against one another? Watch and find out what Thomas and James think!
