The Strangest Way to Spend $150,000
The BMW i8 and Polestar 1 have more in common than you might think. A smattering of carbon fibre, individual feats of hybrid engineering, and stunning good looks. Also, they both command a hefty price tag of around $150,000 USD and send power to all four wheels. Thomas and James have set out to determine which hybrid all-wheel drive concept-car-that-made-it-into-production would get their $150k.
The BMW i8 and the Polestar 1
The Polestar 1 is a limited run flagship with a unique way of creating power. It has a two litre engine that is both turbocharged and supercharged. It has a starter alternator which adds 71 horsepower and 119 foot-pound of torque. And it has two electric motors that produce 232 horsepower and 354 foot-pound of torque. Combined with the engine’s 326 horsepower and 384 foot-pound of torque, the Polestar 1 puts out a whopping 619 horsepower and 738 foot-pound of torque. However, it weighs a mighty 5155 pounds, leaving its 0-60 time at 4.2 seconds. When put into full electric mode, the Polestar 1 has a total range of 83 km.
On the other hand, the BMW i8 is lighter at 4189 pounds but has much less power. It comes with a mid engined 1.5 litre turbocharged three cylinder and an electric motor. Combined, they put out 369 horsepower and 420 foot-pound of torque. This leaves the 0-60 time of the BMW i8 at 4.6 seconds. In full electric mode, the range of the Roadster is 53 km.
